Today 22 September, is Hobbit Day, the birthday of the Hobbits, Bilbo and Frodo Baggins who appear in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. While the little hairy guys share the same birth day, they were born in different years with Bilbo born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age.
Tolkien fans will know this already of course and will be waiting with baited breath for the first in a reported trilogy of Hobbit films directed by Peter Jackson to be released late this year. Starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm as the old Bilbo), the first film is titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
I have no doubt my sons will be one of the first to watch it. Personally any mention of Hobbits and elves and such take me back to second year high school English and Miss Pugh telling us about Bored of the Rings, a parody by Henry Beard and Douglas Kenney.
