Blue Mountains City Library opened its first branch in 1974, which means in 2014 the Council Library Service has turned the big 4-0. Today our library sees over 40,000 people through its doors each year, borrowing, accessing technology, finding answers to questions, and taking part in over 500 programs. That’s 40 years of loans, information, technology and friendly service and we think that’s something worth celebrating!
And if that isn’t enough to celebrate – the 75th anniversary of the NSW Library Act falls on Monday 3 November. This is the landmark legislation that led to the provision of free public library services for the people of NSW. Since the passage of the Act in 1939 the number of public libraries in New South Wales has grown from two – Broken Hill and Sydney – to over 360, with 3.2 million members and more than 35 million people visiting libraries each year.
We will be celebrating the two historic milestones with a special birthday morning tea at Springwood Library on November 5th at 10:30am. Everyone is invited to celebrate – so join us for a trip down memory lane and a fabulous morning tea.
